Tanjore Paintings
Ancient Art of Tanjore Paintings
Index
Origin :   'Thanjavur' [Tanjore] (located in the southern part of India) was the capital of the Chola Empire. It was a great cultural center for all art forms, cultivated and generously promoted for centuries by the Chola kings. Tanjore Painting was one such art that evolved in this part of South India and became popular from the Eighteenth century onwards. Serious attempts are being made to revive this ancient and elegant art through the schools of Traditional Arts and Crafts.
Tanjore Style :   Tanjore paintings, rather unique in their style, mostly depicted various Hindu gods and goddesses with elegant designs, adorned with gold foil, precious stones such as rubies, diamonds, pearls, gold leaf, etc. Several paintings made more than 100 years ago are still in prime shape, attesting to their enduring charm, beauty and elegance. Modern paintings have artificial - synthetic - semiprecious stones instead of rubies or diamonds. But the use of thin 22 or 24 karat gold foil is continued even in modern paintings.
Composition :   Earlier Tanjore Paintings were primarily figures of Lord Krishna in various poses, depicting a story or an anecdote in Hindu scriptures. The main figure was plump and robust while the others in the picture were miniscule in scale. The backgrounds were conventional - incorporating arched entrance, similar to a Temple or Mandapam, curtained or bordered with repetitive designs. Gradually other gods and goddesses were painted in similar style. Modern artists are expanding the theme to broader subjects using traditional painting techniques.
Masterpiece :   These beautiful paintings are made in India by a select group of artists who spend years learning and mastering this ancient art. No child labor is involved in making these masterpieces. Each painting is individually hand-created with meticulous attention to detail and hence is one of a kind. Only a limited number can be prepared each month to ensure consistent quality and lasting beauty.
Authenticity :   Each painting is guaranteed to be a unique piece of art, hand made with extreme care and dedication.
Well Appreciated Gifts : Tanjore Paintings are ideal gifts during special occasions such as marriage, wedding anniversary, birthdays, graduation, retirement, etc. These artworks add immense satisfaction to the recipient as well as the giver. The artists create exquisite three-dimensional pictures that are breath-taking due to their intricate artistic design.
About the frames :
Several Tanjore paintings are shown with the traditional Teak Wood frames in various designs. These are for illustrative purposes only and the hand made, imported frames are sold separately (depending on the design, size, intricacy, etc.). The price shown in these pages is for the picture and is NOT inclusive of any frame. Teak wood, when cared for properly, lasts several decades. All wood components are fumigated before export, (by currently authorized measures in the country of origin), to ensure to be free from insects. Most art on glass base and a few on wood base will be sent in frames to protect from damage during transit, with a nominal charge added for the frames.

How a Tanjore Painting is created :   Making a Tanjore Painting requires dedication and care at every stage. There is no shortcut. To maintain quality, one must use the right kind of materials. An average painting may take anywhere from ten to fifteen days, based on the intricacy, details and the artistry.
- Special Teakwood is selected and cut to suitable sizes along with its back support
- Layers of cloth are pasted tightly over the teakwood to form the base
- A thin layer of paste is applied uniformly over the cloth and the surface is smoothened to eliminate any cracks
- The outline of the sketch is then drawn on the board
- Semi precious stones of various color are then carefully embedded in pre-selected areas to add color, design and beauty
- Thick layers of glue & chalk are applied to specific areas to create designs in three dimensions.
- Wafer thin 22 carat gold foil sheets are attached over certain sections of the embossed designs
- The Figures and the remaining areas are then painted and the artwork is completed
